Guest Post

Before I get to the guest post over at The Enchanted Home....I must address another issue that has come up.

OK....let's see how to go about this.  On my last post I mentioned that I saw Ryan Gainey at Scott's.  Someone who commented was very upset about the remarks I made concerning him.  For the record, here is how I explained it to her in an email:

I have lived in Atlanta for 20 years so I am well aware of how  talented Ryan is.  When I was at Scott's, I was having a conversation with another published "gardener" .  We both looked up and saw Ryan and another person, at which point he saw her and came over.  As the friend he was with started talking to my friend, I politely asked Him if I could take a photograph.  He glanced at me and said yes, then proceeded to turn away.  Famous or not, it would have taken a second to look into the camera at the very least.  I realize he is "quirky", but that does not exclude bad manners does it?  After a few moments, he turned to me and asked if I was a jewelry designer.  It seemed so out of context as I did not even have any jewelry on except a watch and pair of earrings.  I politely said no and before I could even respond further, he had already dismissed me. Which was fine, my inflated ego could handle it.

I never said that he wasn't talented.  I realize I am NOT a famous blogger, or "world renowned" anything!  Which was the point of the "over exaggeration".   Of course, I realize some people do not appreciate nor enjoy my sense of humor.  Sometimes I don't even think I am funny......but honestly, it was not intended to be mean spirited and I was certainly not making fun of someone who is disabled [in a wheelchair, etc].

Further more, I certainly did not say anything about his wonderfully talented ability to transform the earth into beautiful spaces.  Or about him on a personal level.  I was merely  interpreting  how I felt the rendezvous went from my perspective.

That said, I do have some beautiful images of his work [taken from his website] to share with you today.  His 2 acre garden in Decatur, Georgia has been featured in every major gardening publication in the United States and abroad.

It goes without saying that I wish this was my backyard.

Not just a birdbath....but A. Birdbath.

Somebody is real lucky to look out their window and see this.

Love this.....

I could see myself strolling the grounds.
More gorgeousness.....

There...is everyone satisfied....of course nothing I could say on my tiny insignificant blog could affect this man's talent or worth.  No matter how hard I tried.

Disclosure**********please understand that any funny comments I make concerning fabric, pillows, lamps, design, people I do not know, dogs, cars, hair, the weather, paint colors, TV shows, movies, my husband, famous people  are probably made because I am trying to be witty, humorous, entertaining, rib-tickling, wacky, zany, off the wall, amusing, facetious, or tongue in cheek.  Do not take me serious.  Ever.**********Disclosure

Now.....please head over to The Enchanted Home to see what I came up with for Tina while she moves into her castle.....just kidding people!!!

If you get this today...I will be at Tina's on the 18th.

Don't forget about the West Palm giveaway.....

Sha Bam!

Sherry...a few things, for one I LOVE and soo "get" your humor, please for the love of gardening do not change a thing!
Second, beautiful world renowned gardens or not, there is NO excuse for rude, impolite or behavior less than gracious, so shame on HIM.
Last, it is your blog and you should not feel an ioda of doubt or trepediation in how or what you post about. I always say you cannot be all things to all people. And trust me it appears 99.9% love you for who are and what you have to say....including me!
Jewelry designer? Random, little does he know you are a blogcelebrity!! HE should have been asking for YOUR picture:)

PS Now that I got that off my chest, heading to post your post!

Lauren@BaylorSays... said...

Oh please. I didn't even know there were 'world renowned gardens' except for maybe that place in Asheville...or Grey and Marvin. Whatever.

Going to check your post! Yes, I'm up really early.

Love your post on Tina's blog and starting the day with a laugh! I think the reason Gainey asked you if you were a jewelry designer is so that he could get some pieces for free - never seen someone dripping in so much turquoise!

It does not matter who you are or what you have accomplished, manners and common courtesy should be expected from everyone. If you feel you are exempt from those behaviors, then be prepared for any and all well-deserved comments. Furthermore, anyone who defends this behavior and/or excuses it, contributes to our already epidemic problems or rudeness, lack of accountability, and "it's all about me".

I love and appreciate your blog, your talent AND you humor.

Unknown said...

I feel sorry for anyone that isn't able to see the humor in your writing. If you decided tomorrow to stop designing and said you were going to NYC to audition for SNL I'd be cheering you on! You are hilarious!

Seriously? Wow, there was nothing offensive about anything you said. And the dude was rude. Living in LA, I see celebrities all the time...most are not rude. Being famous is no excuse for bad behavior. And it's your blog, write whatever the hell you want. I'll keep reading :)

Have a good one....

My least favorite thing about blogland? The over-sensitivity that leads to bloggers censoring themselves. I often feel like I need to check myself instead of saying what I really think. One of the reasons I love your blog is that you say it! I wish you didn't need to "compensate" for an unhappy commenter, but boy, do I get it!

This seems quite juvenile, late into this "drama" but from what I have read, someone needs to put on their big girl panties and grow up. Seriously ridiculous. A good friend stopped blogging for this reaosn.
I found you from Tina's blog, The Enchanted Home and enjoyed your post and the fun narrative. Happy to find your blog as well and though I dont' get to visit favorite blogs as often as I wish, its always great fun to find a new good one.

Hi Just want to say I've been following your blog for quite some time and find it very therapeutic (big word for me). The two comments that took you to task re "lack of respect" I found rather hypocritical....what gives a "world renowned" anyone the right to be rude to you or anyone else. Just because he is rich and famous is no excuse. In God's eyes we are all equal and the two bloggers should remember that. Keep on being you. Sue

Sherika -- It is YOUR blog. YOURS. You write whatever the hell you want. If they don't like it, they don't have to read it and can go read something more vanilla. If they got that upset after reading such a BENIGN post, they have some sort of insecurity or mental issue. My god.

For real Sherry? I can't imagine how someone could have read that post and been offended...I was howling with laughter, like I always am when I read what you write. Sorry for all of the drama, but know that like just about all of the 51 people who commented before me, we love you just the way you are. Keep up the great work!

A Toile Tale said...

You are so right that Ryan Gainey is a super talent, but you are also right if you happen to be insinuating that he is a difficult, pretentious man. I worked with him for a fundraiser and, lordy, lordy, I'll never recover! I just found your blog through The Enchanted Home. I'm anm Atlanta girl, too. I just spent five days at mart and an afternoon at Scotts!!! Did we see each other?

Anonymous said...

Wow! I read the posts that your readers wrote expressing their opinions about Ryan Gainey, and really I had alot of respect for them for being brave enough to express their opinions about your comments about him. You had more disparaging remarks posted about him in your comment section, then you did about your adventures at Scotts. Pretty amazing and pretty telling about your readership. I think the thought that I took away is that there is too much bullying in the world and people are so quick to judge. As a mother whose teenage daughter committed suicide several years ago and who suffered deeply because she was perceived to be different, in her actions and the way she dressed, I thought some of the comments in defense of Ryan Gainey were thoughtful and meaningful. The other comments not so much...it was like everyone jumped on the "bully bandwagon." Then the poor person that made the comments got slammed in this post. What is wrong with this world? Insenstive women raise insensitive children. Lisa S.

Barbara Greene said...

Lisa, I feel for you...I thought the mass reaction to all this was a little strange, seriously these women need to get a life, I guess Sherry can have an opinion about anyone, but god forbid that anyone has an opinion that differs. The reaction to the poor reader was pretty diappponting she had an opinion people, get over it!!!!The few readers who had a strong opinion about Sherry's comments about Ryan Gainey didn't bother me, but the rabid reaction from the
other readers sure did. Sherry is a big girl, she can dish it out and she should be able to take it!!!Seriously, are Sherry and her readers, the only ones that can have an opinion? She writes the blog, so good, bad or ugly shes going to get some reactions ladies, geez let people have an opinion without trashing them.

Jenny from the Block said...

Jeez, how catty are these women? Do you notice there aren't any men that commented? How is it that your readers can peg a few people that voiced their opinions about your post re: Ryan Gainey and call the commentators mentally ill, (by shes.no.martha.) Or ball-less cowards? Are you serious? What kind of readers do you have? Sherry I agree with one of the comments, let people have their opinions, you wrote it own up to it. As writers we all have to take the occasional critisism. No big deal, but why are so many of your readers so plain mean, why do women always feel the need to "cut" people when they don't agree with their opinions. Lets all be ladies. Just goes to show our gender continues to live up to our reputation, as catty and gossipy. Ladies, really if you don't have anything nice to say about people you don't know don't say anything at all!!!!
