House of Fifty, Boxwoods, and a little HGTV show called Donna Decorated Dallas......

OK...first let's start with the new issue of House of Fifty.

Baby it is live, as I am sure you all know!  And the cover had me at "modern country".....that photo is stunning.  Congratulations to Janell and her team because they are working it so right.....

Next up I have a few pictures/ideas from a store I went to recently in Atlanta.....yes another one.  Stand down people....I KNOW all of you do not live here but this is my hometown and I have to support all these design/home stores.  Retail is tough out there!

Boxwoods Garden and Gifts has an eclectic mix of decorative accessories, antiques and vintage furniture.  It has always been a go to place if you needed a beautiful arrangement that might include an orchid, greenery and a beautiful container.  Now they have opened a home store.

WOWZA.....it is beautiful!

This was on display right when you walked in, and I have to say that Brook and Steve would be proud.  There is quite the "patina style" in this store!

The stairs are just raw pine, but with a gray stain on them.....

I love how primitive they look.

Yes siree bob.....I want this ceiling.

The white wood is just strips of PLYWOOD.....white washed.  Uh huh......

Burlap curtains...so simple!  The walls were a beautiful grayish french blue.

Holy Christmas......this chair has my name written all over it.....invisible ink...:)

Want some dishes with greek key?  I do.

How about some hot damn gorgeous silverware!!!

This chest started singing when I looked at it.  I think it felt it's own "hotness"....

Iloveantiquemirrorsomuch.

Burlap padded walls.....I want these when they finally put me away :)

The edge of a cool bench....

Need some smokin cool tablecloths?

Yeah...this had me dreaming.....what a ceiling.

White and gray with a touch of green is so damn special....
I like that you can hang this on the wall...

Old shutters....dishes stacked....and a cool console.  Just doesn't get much better.

Everywhere I looked....gorgeousness.....If you are in Atlanta....you must go take a look.  There is so much to see here.

OK...one last thing.  Has anyone seen the HGTV show Donna Decorates Dallas???  That is one crazy show.  I thought it was supposed to be funny at first.  OK....I am not going to sit here like I am the authority on all things design because that is not the case.  But I am just wondering is it a regional thing?  Kind of like Swedish design is light and airy, and homes in the mountains are kind of woodsy and such?  Cause that girl can pile on the bling.

I guess that is why there is chocolate, strawberry and vanilla......everybody wants something different.  For me.....and I am like Oprah right now [remember when she said she didn't like beef].....it is not quite my style...just saying.   On a positive note...she is real pretty.  And she will do an install in 6 inch heels..gotta hand it to her on that one.

Last chance for the giveaway......

52 days until Christmas.....Get going!

I live in Dallas, and that is most definitely not what my house looks like... or what I want it to look like! That said, I do think there are plenty of folks down here in Texas that would loooove that super blingy style!

I live the Dallas area and I think it gives all Texans a bad name! It's so over the top. I promise my house looks nothing like that.

People pile on the bling like that all over the country...definitely a style preference and feels a bit heavy.

You should work for the Atlanta tourism board!

The new shop is great. I really need to start scouting more around here to see if we have great shops like that. I really don't think we do. And I'm so glad you mentioned about that show. I flipped it on one night and I thought "are those home owners really happy?" and kept thinking is that really possible? Not my taste either but I guess it might appeal to some.

I have watched that show before and noticed the very same thing! I think that's a Dallas TX "I've got a lot of money to spend" type of decor. ha! It's not my style either but I can certainly appreciate her good sense of design. Love that store you showed. I've never been there, but looks like I would drool just like you did. Thanks for sharing those pics. Maybe, I can get by there some day.

Oh, I need to check out that store. I love the hanging clock. I have the perfect spot for it. I need to save my dollars I'm sure. I have watched that show. She does do over the top. It must be a Texan thing.

Oh girl....her style is so Dallas....I can testify to that, we have stores and stores of her bling around here! Some of them I go into just to see what is NOT my style!

I've been thinking about posting on Donna Decorates Dallas but I'm not sure where to start....I don't think I can watch any more of it. I'm just amazed at the money people will pay for tacky. It literally grosses me out :)

I agree, HOF relly hit it out of the park this time! Have not seen the show and after seeing your review am not likely to. I do have to tell you that your comment "that is why there is chocolate, strawberry and vanilla..." was a favorite of my Dad's, just hearing it makes me smile and think of him!

What a beautiful store...love the palette. I am not loving what I am seeing the Dallas decorating diva doing...boy thats a mouthful! Sorry but it looks a little tacky in my opinion.
Agree, House of Fifty looks AMAZING!

That store is amazing! I have to move near Atlanta! And I also thought the new hgtv show was a joke too! WOW- to each is own! :)

I don't know anyone with a house like that and I live in the DFW area. Obviously, her clients must like it, and since it's their house...
But I am embarrassed by the whole thing: name of show, design, you name it. I guess it would be good for me to remember that she and her clients would probably not be big fans of my home. :)

Another Great shop to put on my list of places to visit....

"Bling is her thing"...do NOT like the show...do NOT like her style...too heavy, too gaudy, too moroccan (sp) too everything! I don't watch it anymore...I was making to many comments the whole time I was watching it...by myself...like WHAT is she thinking...that is ugly as hell....the neurologist is speachless because he HATES it! lol

I will be shocked if it makes it another season...

And that....is my humble opinion :)

Oh I MUST see this Debbie Does Dallas show…I mean Donna Decorates Dallas…Yeah.
Anywho…I will stalk that mirror/wood chest until it's in my bedroom. FOR real Sherry!

Hi! I just discovered your blog and had a couple of good giggles. As for Donna, I say she ditches those heels when the cameras are off or she has one helluva lot of help.

Oh nice, what a gorgeous store! So glad to live in the area!!

Saw the magaazine a day ago, those ladies work so hard to bring a beautiful publication. When a shop looks that faabulous you may play show and tell all you want, love it. Otherwise I've never seen the show but I will now.

Kim@Chattafabulous said...

Donna freaks me out a little bit. Where does she find these clients who like this style? Where is this Boxwoods place? May have to stop in while in ATL over the holidays!

Interior Design Musings said...

If I happen to flip by and Donna is on, it's like a bad car accident on the Interstate for me. I simply can not look away. If others are like me, that's where they're getting the ratings. And not true confessions, I do the same thing with that show called Hoarders - just can't seem to look away! M.

Tammy@InStitches said...

I can't look away either. She is pretty, though.....

I haven't been to the new Boxwoods store, need to get by there...hopefully this weekend! It is definitely one of my fave stops.

There is something to be said about simple, clean lines and lovely inviting textiles.

What a beautiful store. I am not familiar with the show. I will have to check it our so I will be up on the 411.

Marianne said...

Sherry, you crack me up! I have not seen said show, but don't think I could watch more than 30 seconds of it. Yikes! Way over the top!

amy h said...

Sorry - live in Dallas area and that is NOT a regional thing. Just an over the top decorator who has found some clients suffering from the same disease. Please don't judge the rest of us Texans based on this scary show! :)

The Boxwoods Home store is gorgeous...and it does look like it was stocked by Brooke and Steve. I love, love, love that flatware and the Mora clock. Wish I lived nearby.

As for Donna's show, I immediately thought of the title of that infamous adult film Amy Vermillion mentioned when I first heard the title. I don't know what that says about me, but my immediate reaction was "Is HGTV kidding?" What impression of this show are they trying to make? The design work is so over the top that it gives over the top a bad name. There are no words. Watch it at your peril.
Have a great day.

Oh my, I have not seen DDD and it looks like I'm not apt to. I hate to say it, but it's just more of what HGTV thinks is good design. Really frightening.

Lovely store and I need to go check out the new HOF. Thanks for keeping me in the loop as always!

What a pretty store. I am always amazed by the talented people who are able to take so many disparate items and create such a lovely setting. We have a store here in Southern California called Gardenology and the merchandising is fabulous. It is such a treat to visit.

I loved the detail on the bench!

It's always fun to visit you. Hope you have a great day, Cindy

Holy OTT! You'd think she grew up here with all the bling and overdone everything!
The shop is so lovely though - I could drop some serious coin in there! :)

I thought it was a joke at first as well. Oh well... she seems to come from a great place with a great sense of humor. The artists she works with are characters so they make it fun to watch.

Boxwoods = my kind of store. Donna Does Dallas, not so much. In fact, didn't she compete (and lose)on Design Stars a few seasons ago? (Yes, I'm a HGTV junkie.) So glad there is a public forum to discuss this train wreck. Does anyone else think that some people (her clients) can be easily swayed into thinking this monstrousity is good taste?

Denise

I live in Dallas too and have never seen anything like that. Well, to be honest, maybe in the 80s. My first reaction was, "she is NOT in Dallas" (and she's not). It's embarrassing that the rest of the country will think that is the taste level here.

Carolyn@Sweet Chaos Home said...

Sherry, you crack me up! And, I'm glad you sort of said what most of us are thinking about that show. I've only seen one episode, and I couldn't believe it was real! Even when I'd start to think, "Okay. That piece isn't horrible." She'd add more tacky bling to it and make it worse.

But, you're right... she is very pretty. And, I'm sure she's a much nicer person than me :)

So many beautiful offerings in this store! Love the gorgeous chest of drawers and the greek key plates. Like the floor and ceiling, too. As for DDD, I haven't seen that show. From the pictures you have shown, I think her style is quite over the top. A little too heavy for my taste but to each their own!

Thanks for all your lovely comments, Sherri. You are very sweet!

Have a great weekend!

You've got me dying to go to Boxwoods. What a fabulous store. Laughing out loud at the blinged up house. Unfortunately I do think there is a lot of that every where. We all see with different eyes don't we?

You truly have the most amazing shops in Atlanta!! Thanks for sharing the holiday issue of House of Fifty with your readers today as well! Much appreciated! And the Donna show, very interesting. :) Janell

Please don't think all of Dallas is filled with tacky blingy decor. Don't me wrong it exists but it's not the norm.

Sally@DivineDistractions said...

Hi, I found your blog through Janelle. I am a Dallas designer, and trust me....this is NOT Dallas design. Donna doesn't even live in Dallas but in a suburb SW of there. Her boutique is in another burb. I started doing posts after her show to showcase real Dallas designers, but I realized that I was only giving her more publicity by doing that so I stopped. You can check out my blog to see if you like.

Pretty store in Atlanta!

As for Donna... I actually know them, so I will chime in here. Yes, she and her daughters are very pretty and very sweet. They are all from a city named Arlington, which is midway between Dallas and Fort Worth. Yes, she was on Design Star a few seasons ago. Yes, her style is waaay over the top. And no, that is most definitely not the prevailing "look" around here -at least not in the design/decorator community. In fact, one if the projects they show is her daughter's house, which they did to fill a show.
I really do like the family, but not so much her style.

Kathysue said...

House of Fifty has done another great issue!! The store looks like a really fun place to go shopping. Now!!! For Donna decorates Dallas!! Omgosh, really?!!! I am going to be honest!! It is hideous at every level and to think she is representing Dallas is a bit scary. It looks like a throw back from the 90's. It is obvious her clients are happy, but I have to ask WHY? I guess it is all about exposure and they believe if it is shiny it shows your wealth. I on the other hand think it shows lack of taste. I am really surprised at HGTV for putting this show on the air and I actually feel a bit sorry for Donna, she seems like a truly nice lady and I cannot imagine she is getting good reviews. I would not want to be in her shoes, literally!! AS with all design it is subjective, but IMHO this is not design this is over indulgence!!

I just saw your post via Janelle, and wanted to say that I LOVE that store. The dresser with the mirror insets? Wow. Dallas may have Donna, but what about Atlanta having the Housewives..yikes

Amy Chalmers said...

I liked this post~lots of pretty stuff in House of Fifty. I am on record as saying I enjoy watching Donna decorating Dallas. Not my style, but I am amazed when I see what she does~there are people that want their homes to look like some version of a castle interior with extra animal print and crystals and Donna delivers. I thought she did a great job on that boys room who wanted a hunting lodge style. So while not my style it does make for a perfect show because it is out of the ordinary. She seems nice too~like a kinder version of Mary McDonald!
