CLASSIC DECORATING 101

The other day I was doing one of those deep cleanings in my bedroom....you know the kind where you don't clean so much but just start throwing stuff out cause it feels cluttered.

I have a basket that holds all of my  old Cottage Living magazines.  It is a big dust collector cause it's not like I root through there very often.

I grabbed them all up.... put them on my kitchen counter where they would later head to the recycling container.

My thoughts were "why do I need these....I can find everything online now plus they are outdated right?

Of course my ADD kicked in and I happened to see something on one of the covers that made me start looking through it.....and that was the end of my deep clean.

Noooooooo.....

So much for that.  Anyway here is my point.

I came upon a 2008 issue which included Chaffee Braithwate's  small Atlanta home and thought.....dang it is still revenant today.

Let's discuss.

OK...seagrass...check
White walls.....check
White slipcovers....check
Linen curtains....check
Ghost chair...check [you have to look hard for this but it's there].

I mean this could be published today.
Black and white kitchen with no upper cabinets...yep it's still happening in design land.

When I renovated my own kitchen 20 years ago I decided not to have any upper cabinets.  I'm no design genius but it felt less "kitcheny" to me.
I also opted for white cabinets....and neutral backsplash.  The granite is a whole other story but hellwillfreezeoverbeforethatgetschanged.  Or so I have been told.

Do you remember seeing this bedroom?  Brownish/gray color....with white?  Color can always be added.
We have wicker and botanicals. Pretty classic.

These are my botanicals which hung in my LR for 10 years.  Yes...something actually stayed that long.  Call the design police.

I recently moved them last year to my guest room.

And in this bathroom....look to the paint color list to the right.  How often have you seen a favorite room with BM Revere Pewter and BM Wickham Gray?

You probably are't going to believe this but I have 2 of the same sinks in my master bathroom which I picked out in 1993.  This picture was taken about a year after we moved in.
Crazy huh?

I have updated a few things over the years....frameless shower door...
Added some antique mirror but I still love my sinks.

Believe me I love a good trend as much as the next person....but I am very careful when it comes to things that are expensive to change.

The good thing about classic decor is that it will save you in the long run.

Black, white, gray, wicker, seagrass, bell jar lighting, ticking fabric, slipcovers, blue and white, chrome, white subway tile, white cabinets, antique rugs, white curtains, black iron hardware....the list goes on.

If you don't have a lot of money like me....then go safe and add a few trends along the way to freshen up!

OK....need to wrap this up because we have an appointment with a financial planner.  I would sooner have somebody pull all my nose hairs out one by one.  You know that hurts and makes your eyes water like crazy.

I had to Laugh out Loud at "call the design police!! because something had stayed in place for 10 years!! Hey - When something 'works' - it works and no need to tweak. I've always loved working / living with neutrals, black and white -- SO easy to change the look and feel for a season with a pop of color, shift of lighting and change of some accessories! Great post! (Did one of these cleans upstairs in June) - FUN to flip thru old mags and see what is yes - still popular ... because it's classic!

I donated piles my old decor magazines to my local Savers thrift store. They resell for .30ea. and continue to spread home decor love :)

Hi Sherry,

I am an interiors student at Chat. Tech and we are always in need of design mags for various lessons and projects. Instead of recycling consider passing them to us instead!

I have a couple "when hell freezes over, or so I've been told" projects around my house too. So now when I do get to change things I'm definitely sticking with classic choices.

Sherry, Don't part with Cottage Living!!

I keep mine organized by month, so when the mood hits and I have some time to relax, I pull out all of the issues over the years for the current season (no doubt, I've reread all the summer issues more so than others).

Your home is beautiful and timeless…classic is never off trend.

I am slowly learning this after buying a lot of not-so-classic stuff at first. You are a good teacher.

I would have totally thought this was published today! I love this house!

Sherry this home is as current as if it was designed today I love it! Classic is forever!

I just had to let go of my shelter magazines. Heck My books themselves had already invaded the entire home.
It did not hurt as much as I thought it would!

I need a favor. Can you come over and beat my husband over the head with 1000 pictures of kitchens with no uppers? He says we can't possibly ever sell our house if we don't have upper cabinets. I agree its less kitchen-y and I am really short.

Noooo, don't throw out the Cottage Living mags! I am sure someone would be willing to buy them from you; they've become collector's editions now. But anyway, I can't believe that is a picture of your bath from 20 years ago. You are so right, classics never go out of style. What was everyone doing in 1993? Mauve, forest green, and over-the-top swags on their draperies. Yours is classic and still beautiful! Rock on.

My magazine hoarding days are over except... My Cottage Living magazines. Love them & still flip through them often. I completely agree about featured home , still very current. Did your husband talk to mine about the granite and hell freezing over???? Dreaming of marble!!!!!

You make a good point here about classics. Since I don't like spending big money to change it up I appreciate that angle, too. Your 1993 sink is like angels singing. That could never ever go out of style.

Your kitchen is beautiful and still fresh 20 years later. It just shows that Sherry, Shazam, Shacranky, Sharika, and my favorite, Shapoo-poo all have fabulous tastes!!!

I'm not allowed to change my counters either. I was told to not even think about changing them.
My husband is pretty patient with me changing everything else, so I'm going to let him have this one. There are worse things then black granite. (Even though I want a walnut butcher block.)

**snort** financial planner meeting. Just went through it myself and my not-conservative CPA and planner just told us we were doing it wrong. Nobody pays off their houses anymore because money is so cheap. Duh. Get ready to feel really, really stupid for doing all those crazy responsible things you thought were right. Gah!

You made me laugh out loud again. I feel pretty certain i know who said "hell will freeze over, before the tile in the kitchen will change"! I adore those fabulous bathroom sinks... and i always think it's so fun and interesting to see which decor items stand the test of time without becoming dated...

Comfort! Those old magazines. I still have my collection of Colonial Homes and seriously regret letting my Victorias go. Those titles may be unknown to some readers but they were glorious! To me, Colonial Homes is still relevant for traditional interiors. As for the gray bathroom colors, I'm working on my second gray room this year and one is a bathroom. Still relevant to my clients.

Hahaha! It's really hard to pull off funny and informative in one post, but you pulled it off!!!! I so agree with you classics, hence big pieces should always be in a classic color. You house will always be the epitome of classic and hence, you love it and we love it as well!

I still have all of my CL's. Of course you were the trail blazer for coolness. We all knew that :).

P.S. I had a dream last night that we were working on a room together and I invited you to help me with my house. Maybe it was a premonition. Are you coming to Greensboro any time soon?

I can't seem to bring myself together and toss my design magazines either...why? I have no idea. I keep mine in an old chest like their treasures from the past...crazy. I'm a new follower and love your style Sherry!

One of the many reasons I love and admire your design talents, you know a classic when you see it! Your design aesthetics have their own uniqueness, but one that will stand the test of time in my book. Great way to show how timeless decor never goes out!!

girl you got it going on. i remember this article, and this is why i tend to hang on to my dusty magazines as well. i don't wanna get hung up on trends or chevron this or chalk painted that. you have to listen to your own heart and stick to the pieces you know will not bore you in 2 years. (that said, sweet mother, i wanna paint my 'pearly' cabinets pure white and bust out the sandy quartz to make room for white marble). oh well.

I'm supposed to be cleaning my house right now....stopped to send an email, and then you know one thing leads to another and I'm checking in on my favorite blogs! Great post. I'm always amazed at how fresh those Cottage Living rooms still look. Just did a post on one Monday! Those people at CL were crazy talented.

You couldn't be more right about classic decorating. I'm astounded that the bathroom pic you showed is from the '90s. It's exactly what I'm looking at today for putting in our master bathroom. My '90s bathroom was bad - lots of burgundy. Maybe even some lace. Bad....

Is the cord on your kitchen light a really thick rope? That's cool.

You're Shamazing!

The sinks are very nice and unique in their own way ;) .. Like them very much.
Could you please tell me where did you get them from?

Plus the pulling out thing you talked about was also very sarcastically nice ;)
