So lets start with the foyer before.
See that black box on the glass console? Well that is where we put our keys when we walk in the door. It is a very important container because if my husband doesn't put his keys there, then they are lost in the bowels of the rest of the house and the search will begin. By me. BUT......
I was tired of that look and wanted to try something new.
So the stripes got repainted.
These were cream and kind of a gray with a hint of pink.
To black and white!
Then I moved out the console and this is where the trouble begins. I wanted to put this bench in it's place.
Pre makeover.
And move this mirror to the foyer.
The big shabby blue one in the background. But Mr. H said no...he did not want to bend down to get his keys. crickets. huh. AYKM. Lame excuse. I'm doing it. The exercise will be good for you. Remember to use your core when bending.
So here are a few pictures of the bench makeover. Mind you I really had no idea what I was doing on this one. Let's start with paint. Chalk paint in Graphite. Well that was after I killed the small colony of spiders underneath the sucker....or rather Mr. H did and then took off the welting.....or rather Mr. H did and then took out the bajillion staples....OK...he did that also. But then he left because he saw where this was going and would rather sit in a cool office then do manual labor. His parting words were "I think you should take this to a professional".....oh ye of little faith.
Here is a closeup after the paint and wax. The fabric looks like burlap but it is actually a burlap and linen blend. Less scratchy. Also in this picture I wanted to show you that I put 4 staples in to hold it in place before I started hot glueing.
Then I just folded it and glued small areas at a time right along the edge. That dang glue is HOT as a MF. Danger.
There she is glued. It was a little tricky because she has curves....like me :)
Looking better than I thought.
Then I removed the 4 staples and use small upholstery tacks about an inch apart.
Hung the mirror and here she is!
For some reason it makes the SMALL foyer look larger. There used to be a closet where the bench is and I took it out. Who cares about hanging coats. [Let me know when you get tired of me saying...see those pretty white floors!]
The mirror just fit with about a 1/2 inch on either side! See my empty pot outside the door? Yeah had some large ferns there but killed them.
I would clean up all the fuzzy stuff but you really can't see it. Now I have to figure out a new place for the keys. It's always something.
Phew....it feels good to have one room done. Don't forget about the giveaway...check it out here
Happy Wednesday!

it looks amazing! I love the black stripes!
Looks great!!! I loooove that mirror. A lot. You could always do a little hook on the wall action for the keys?
Girl. You rocked the reupholstry! GREAT JOB the room looks amazing! WOW! My jaw dropped at the bench and the stripes are soooooo cool, lovin the graphite chalkpaint. lovey love. xoxo shel
ps- 'use your core while bending' still laughing. good stuff.
SO pretty! I love the drama!
Meg
Mahvelas of course!! Love that fabric and the tacks. Great stripes which I have never attempted. They would all be crooked if I did it. Love the graphite. Hmmmm, feel another paint order coming on!
Gorgeous! I love black & white! you could hang a key hook above the light switch for the hubs to hang his keys....
love the dramatic black and white stripes..and the bench looks fabulous...as does the floors..I'm really liking your beautiful white washed floors...can't wait to see the rest of your home when it's put back together...

You crack me UP! I love a designer who doesn't take herself seriously.
love the stripes and the bench! i bet it all looks fabulous with your new floors!!
Sher, who's fabric on the pillow?
I love it all. The color is perfect and are you sure I can't come steal that mirror. It is gorgeous. What a beautiful first impression.
Ha, nice job Sherika! Love how your man saw where this was going and got ghost on 'ya. You should've given him some before he got started. Guarantee he would've finished the job. Nevertheless, nothing reaches perfection until you do it yourself. Love your style! xo
It looks gorgeous, sherry!! Love your sense of humor.. xx meenal
One more thing, was that a horn sconce in the background of the last photo? I like that, too. When can I come by and see what else is in that basement?
Looks fab! Love the bench, and the large mirror. Now that your husband will be working his core, he'll be able to admire his abs in the mirror :)
Your foyer looks great and your husbands abs are going to be so toned :) The use of upholstery nails on that piece was genius and the black stripes give the perfect boom boom pow!
You nailed it!!!! Its fabulous the black bold stripes are fabulous and loving that bench, the color is so beautiful then the large mirror gives the room a larger feeling...well done!!
PS Stop by doing a great signed book giveaway
Sha Dazzle! I love it :) And, I may completely copy your b&w stripes in the new house--wanna help?!
I love your posts about your husband because I think your relationship is much like mine w/ my husband. They both know when to "just go with it." We're always right, afterall :)
Love the stripes and the white floors. The bench turned out fabulous and the mirror look wonderful. Great job. Hugs, Marty
You are brilliant! I may have to come over and steal your bench :) And, as always, thanks for the laughs! I adore you!
ooh, me likey! the fact that you had that bench in your basement for 5 years makes me wonder what's down there--and if you have anything i might need to put my hands on! i love how your husband tries to put up a fight but then gets on board--my kinda man. miss seeing you! :)

That is a quite a transformation! Everything in that foyer looks gorgeous, I love it. The black and white stripes is dramatic while the addition of the huge mirror, the beautiful bench and the throw pillow softens it. I love how the foyer looks so clean and fresh. Great job, Sherry!
I also adore your living room design. I guess it's the living room before? Because I see dark wood floors...

Love love love love love!!!!!!!
Ohhhh... love the black and white stripes! What is it about black and white that is so good? And, that mirror, omg, it would look good anywhere, it's wonderful! Hope you find a new place for the keys that everyone is happy with. Most men don't really like all the changing things around... Of the guys i know, 90% of them think decorating is putting a really big microfiber chair with adjustable levers and a cup holder directly in front of a ginormous tv. But, our guys help us out anyway, even if they think we're insane, that's why we love em....
Cindy
Fantastic...love it! Can't wait to see the rest...keep it coming please! :)
LOVE the contrast of the more cottagey mirror and bench with the super crisp stripe. Just when I thought I was over the bold stripe accent wall thing, you have me reconsidering.
This looks AMAZING!!! Great job on the upholstery and the paint job on the bench. The entire space looks so comfy cozy-I love it!
Awesome! I liked the stripes before, but the black and white rocks. Lovin' the bench transformation, too! And coincidentally, I burned the c**p out of my finger using my hot glue gun on my desk project last week. Hope you escaped unscathed!
It looks beautiful! You definitely made the right decision to move that mirror to the foyer. It looks fantastic there with your stool. And I love the color choices and furniture tacks on the stool. Is that straight Graphite, one coat? On the samples on websites it looks darker. I love it!
the bench looks great! how did you do it?? I would love to try to recreate that paint color!
mollie.hindley@gmail.com
sherry, that looks awesome!!!!!!! i looove the black stripes. more than i ever thought i would. i want to hug them and paint them on my walls!
One more thing...totally off topic...do you happen to remember where you bought the yellow side table in Baby G's nursery? Many thanks, Karen :)
Looks great as always, Sherry! I am inspired by the stripes (want to do them in my hallway), the mirror (have a framed mirror for above our dresser that needs some distressing) and your bench (IDHTBPTBB- it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful) because hot glue rocks!
Great makeover! Your entry pulls off horizontal stripes very well. ;)I love the bench & mirror as well.
I, too, want the scoop on the pillows. They would be amaze-balls in my living room. Well, when I get around to picking a sofa fabric, chair fabric, curtain panel fabric, paint the room, bookcases. Do you see where this is going? The pillow fabric could be a jumping off point. Domino effect right?
Answers to a few questions....I got the fabric at Lewis and Sheron Fabrics here in Atlanta. I went online to see if they had it but I did not see it although I was there the other day and saw it. [That's a lot of "its"] Perhaps you could email them with the picture. The second question is yes it is straight Graphite...2 coats. BUT...I put some Brixwax on and I panicked when I went to buff. The paint started coming off in areas....which I then said....OK...it will be distressed. Not doing it over!
Love the black and white stripes, love the bench redo, love the mirror. Love your sense of humor most of all.
Sherry- I'm reworking my foyer, too and just reupholstered a little bench. And am considering black and white horizontal stripes! So I am SO loving this post!
It looks great, especially with the green splash of a plant. Your little bench looks the perfect place to sit.
Loretta
I love the black stripes. It is amazing how a little color goes a long way.

did on that upholstery
job, Sherry....I'd have
been right there with

Just awesome! I love the ikat pillow with the rough luxe burlap look. Really nice. I can see a nice Hermes hang bag tossed casually on the seat. GREAT job.
Black and white stripes!! alright!!! You are so speaking my language, I really love the new look. How fun to shop your own house and come out with such a different look!!! You are so talented Sherry, love love it!! xo Kathysue
It looks amazing.
I have to ask....how did you get Mr. H to comply with every whim?? I MUST know. Seriously. Please!! I dont know how many more "thats always been there" or "it was making me physically sick" I can get away with!!

It looks so good that I wish I had a foyer to stripe.
I never saw you as a black & white stripe kind of girl. Who knew? I'm anxious to see how this plays with the rest of your rooms.
the dark stripes are incredible! love the mirror there too. beautiful!!
Love it! Every single bit! I just posted about benches vs. tables in the foyer. I with I had seen yours first! Care if I blog about it and show your before and after?
Miss seeing you!

Looks great; absolutely loving your bench. The color and fabric look so fresh and perfectly juxtapose with the bold stripe; well done!
I LOVE the b/w stripes, I LOVE the white floor, I LOVE the bench. Oops you did it again, SH!
Love the paint finish on the bench and the black &white stripes are so bold!
Love the stripes and all. suggestion, acrylic shelf near light switches for keys. Tap plastics makes them inexpensively. Chuck
what an improvement!! Just throw a little basket on that bench for his keys and problem solved...and he wont even have to bend over and he can practice his pitching skills at the same time..a man's dream solution!
Hey, Sherry, I always love to see what you are up to! That looks fabulous, as always. One of these days, I'd love to see it in person, so let's plan an outing before the summer is over. Your place just keeps getting better and better.
I love everything about the new foyer! Love the combination of the grey bench and mirror with the stripes!
They don't call it HOT glue for nothing ! Looks ahmazing.....
Gorgeous transformation. And as always, you make me laugh and smile! :) I love the stripes. The black and white gives it a wow factor! The bench and pillow combination are great too. I bet your husband now says, "you were right!" :)
The clean lines of the high contrast stripes look fantastic juxtaposed against the casual bench upholstery and the aztec patterned cushion - a great eclectic mix!
A small rattan basket (similar to your planter) attached to the wall beneath the light-switch plate may be an easy fix for the 'key dilemma'.
Sherry,
I love the look of the upholstery tacks! This DIY has given me tons to think about. Now, I just need to find something to try it out on! M.
Sherry! This is pure fabulousness. Not only do the floors look amazing, but those black and white stripes are just so great mixed the the mirror and bench. You go! I am SOOOO excited to see what else you do with the house.
P.S. I'm seeing a few discreet iron hooks on the black stripe next to the light switch for keys. Or would that spoil the whole look?
What a beautiful transformation! The mirror is gorgeous! Enjoy the wonderful weekend, Kellie xx
Oh my gosh Sherry it is beautiful! The bench is fantastic. Love the new stripes. And that mirror - wow! What is the fabric on that pillow?
WOW, you did a wonderful job! I love the bench! I can't wait to see where you put your keys.:)Now you have my curiosity up about the painting and wax part of the bench. I'm guessing painting first and put some kind of wax over it? Where do you get the wax?
Have a happy 4th! xo
You should start every post with, "prepare to be amazed!". Love this. Maybe stripes are what my entry needs... They say copying is the biggest form of flattery. ;-)
Wow. Really Sherry? You are amazing! And I still maintain that we might be sharing a husband. Mr. V occasionally has opinions too. And we sure know where that gets him. Any who...love the new foyer!
Happy weekend my friend,
Amy
You make it impossible not to laugh and love you from afar! I am not half as funny as you are, but I always feel funnier after reading your posts :) love everything you did. Wasn't sure about the black and white stripes instead of the softer ones...until I saw the end result. Fabulous! Oh, and I know all about hot glue and burlap/open weave fabrics. Ouch!
Have a great weekend!
Linsey
You rocked the reupholstry!

love the black and white stripes! love your foyer, love your bench...love it all.
Love your bold stripes and that mirror is fantastic! Your foyer looks really nice and I like the bench better than the table. You'll find a great key solution.

looks great, sherry! donna
Magazine worthy, magazine worthy, magazine worthy!
Very nice my friend!

Oh yeah that look reaaaal good. Good color choice on the stripes. Adds more drama.
Sherry, Sherry, Sherry. White floors and black stripes? I LOVE it!!!!
Your posts are so funny...and the way you put a room together is amazing! Love the bold stripes along with the new/old bench. Oh, and that mirror looks perfect there...although I think it would look perfect anywhere, I love it!

Wow! Great great job w/ your foyer. Visiting from Simple Dwellings and so glad I found your blog. I just finished stripes in our living room so I am a HUGE fan of the stripes and yours are FAN-TAS-TIC!!! Nice work!!
The black and white is AMAZING! Love the stripes! The bench looks so great there too! You're so good it's ridiculous!
Okay, I started reading this post thinking "Why is she painting over the stripes?" and by the end was thinking "WOW, that looks SO GOOD in black & white!!!" So, so good!!!
Rosa
Gorgeous! And I love your sense of humor. I'm pretty sure I'm going to sit here and read your entire blog instead of painting my room.
Where did you get the pillow?
So, so gorgeous. The bold stripes are just perfect! I hate to say it- but I'm lusting after that pillow on the bench. Lusting!
